Bad Boy Demian Maia Fights Dan Miller at UFC 109: Bad Boy and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Demian Maia, will try to get back to his winning ways at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, when he goes up against Dan Miller. Maia (11-1-0) is a second degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and is coming off the first loss of his career. With credentials like a two time World Champion, 2006 Pan American Champion, 2007 Super Challenge under-83kgs (182 lbs.) Champion, and 2007 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champion, Maia has been widely regarded as possibly the best jiu-jitsu practicioner the UFC has. Maia has won Submission of the Night four out of six of the nights he has fought for the UFC. Out of his eleven wins, eight have been by submission, and six of those came in the first round. So needless to say, he is extremely dangerous on the ground. Dan Miller (11-2-0) is an up and coming middleweight in the division with a 3-1 record in the UFC. He has a background in wrestling, which he has done since he was a little kid, and he has used that to help strengthen his jiu-jitsu. Out of Miller’s eleven wins, six have been by submission. Before coming to the UFC, Dan Miller had actually become the IFL’s Middleweight Champion. After his first loss in the UFC, you can expect him to be looking for any way to start his climb back to the title, this time in the UFC. This won’t be a fight that stays standing. Look for Maia to try and set up take downs with his striking. While I think Miller will try to keep the fight standing, but he will be surprised at how much Maia’s striking has improved and will get tagged with a few good hits. Miller will keep this fight standing, maybe trying to mix in a few take downs, but the ground is not a place that you want to be on with Maia. This is going to be an excellent fight. Both fighters are submission artists, and it should be a great display of grappling skills. I’m sure Maia will show some improved stand up fighting, and after the first loss of his career, you know he will be hungrier than he has ever been for a victory. |

‘Steve ‘The Robot’ Cantwell Looks to Rebound Against Vladimir ‘The Janitor’ Matyushenko’ Cantwell looks to pick apart Matyushenko in the year’s first event. On January 2, 2010, Bad Boy Fighter Cantwell (7-3-0) will be going up against Matyushenko (23-4-0) on the preliminary card of UFC 108. Cantwell (22) is a young, up and coming light heavyweight, and he is looking to rebound from his second loss in the UFC. He is a well-rounded fighter, as three of his wins have been by (T)KO and the other four by way of submission. He has a solid chin though, as only one loss has been by knock out, and he has never lost by submission. Vladimir Matyushenko got his nickname after beating members of the American wrestling team, including Olympian Kevin Jackson at a meet in Siberia. With noteable wins over opponents like Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Pedro Rizzo. However, these fights took place when he was almost eight years older and in his prime. He will be 39 years old when they square off.
Their stand-up is pretty even. Cantwell’s Jiu-Jitsu and Matyushenko’s wrestling will cancel each other out, so this fight will probably come down to who has better conditioning. At 17 years younger, the edge would have to be given to Cantwell. Cantwell should win this fight by decision or submission, and when he does, he will begin his climb to the top of the division. |
